Joe Calantoni from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory performs a tabletop demonstration to explain the physics of munitions burial in underwater environments. As water waves grow large during storms they generate momentary failure of the sand bed. The physics of granular sorting determines whether munitions will bury or rise to the surface.
