Joint Base San Antonio
May 13, 2014 | 2:09
Ceremonies marking the 60th Anniversary of the Defense Language Institute English Language Center and the opening of the DLIELC Alumni International Wall of Fame took place on the DLIELC campus at Joint Base San Antonio Lackland, May 9, 2014. The DLIELC prepares U.S. and international military and civilian personnel to communicate in English and provides English language training and services to programs around the world in support of Security Cooperation objectives. During the ceremony building 7535 also known as the main building of the headquarters building was renamed International Hall. Since being built in 1993 International Hall has 60,000 international and U.S. students training for follow on training or positions of higher responsibility in their home countries.
SB – Brig Gen Ayyar, “…Congratulations to all on your 60th, this institution has reached the age that its honor and reputation are worth defending. And all that’s required of each of us is to be our best self, each day.”
SB – Col Anderson, “…We’ve grown into a college…teaching and evaluating some 3500 students per year from 110 countries. Between 800 and 1300 students can be found at DLI on any given day. While studying English, they’re also learning about American culture and our way of life.”
NARRATION: Immediately following the anniversary ceremony there was a ribbon cutting for the Defense Language Institute English Language Center Alumni International Wall of Fame. The Alumni Wall of Fame honors the distinguished alumni of the Department of Defense language community who have contributed significantly to language training of military linguist operations and culture training.
NARRATION: Reporting from JBSA-Lackland, I’m Tony Hearst from the 502nd Air Base Wing Public Affairs Office.
