Creating Off-Shore Reef Habitats
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District
June 28, 2013 | 12:17
In this video, officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Coastal Resources Division (CRD) submerge materials into the Atlantic Ocean off the shore of Brunswick, Ga., to create an off-shore reef habitat, June 28, 2013. Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Savannah District – Regulatory Division came along to observe the work and perform a compliance inspection. The Corps' previously issued a permit to CRD under its Regulatory program, which issues permits for any constriction or development in Georgia that impacts rivers, streams, wetlands and other aquatic resources under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act. The compliance inspection ensured the off-shore reef was deployed safely and properly according to requirements set forth in the USACE permit. It was also a great opportunity for USACE regulatory specialists to experience a hands-on marine life improvement project. Video by January Murray, CRD.
