On June 13, 1978, an HH-3E Jolly Green Giant Helicopter from the 102nd Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Group now the 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton Beach N.Y., was returning to base after training at Plattsburgh Air Force Base, N.Y. After encountering inclement weather, the seven members turned back to Plattsburgh, but with low visibility, the HH-3E hit the Trembleau Mountain just below its peak.
